Leukeran Side Effects

Leukeran side effects Leukeran is a remedy of the chemotherapy nature aimed at combatting cancer. It slows the growth and spread of cancer cells in the organism. It is often taken with other chemotherapy medications for gaining optimal results. Leukeran can manifest side effects as the unwanted response of the body to the main of supplementary components of the drug. Some of the side effects can be severe and even life-threatening. They may occur because of the incorrect dosage or dosing violation (missing the dose and taking a double dose later, for instance). Knowing of Leukeran contraindications can reduce the probability of adverse reactions. Side effects can be of the following nature:

Allergies

Common allergic reactions to Leukeran are swelling of lips, cheeks, tongue, sometimes there can be rush and shiver, pain in the chest, joints and stomach, problems with breathing, disorders of menstrual function, overstrain, seizures, hallucinations. There are also mouth sores, abnormal bleeding and bruising, seizures and cough have been reported.

Hematological Adverse effects

Leukeran therapy may cause certain hematological problems. For instance, bone marrow suppression, anemia, an acute drop of the white blood cells number (because of decreased bone marrow production). There can also be the lack of platelets in the blood.

The Nervous System Adverse Effects

Leukeran can cause severe collateral damage to the CNS, however, in rare cases. They can be muscle twitches and fiber contractions, confusion, spinal cord disorders, tremors, convulsions and so on. Seizures have been reported in patients who exceed the recommended dose.

Gastrointestinal/Dermatological Side Effects

Gastrointestinal collateral damage is rarely met in patients taking Leukeran. They may include vomiting and nausea, constipation and diarrhea, ulcers in the mouth. What about dermatological Leukeran adverse effects, there can be rash, swelling, itching, and hives of the skin. Dermatological side effects can appear after taking the dose for the first time or at the initial stage of the therapy. There are also cases of Stevens-Johnson syndrome and erythema that manifest in skin lesions, itching, and high temperature.

Additional Adverse Effects

Besides standard potential adverse reactions, there may happen the rare ones like jaundice, liver damage, are leukemia and secondary malignancies, pulmonary fibrosis, drug fever and pneumonia. Problems with vision, extreme weakness and sleepiness, stupor and rheumatic pains can also be manifested.

Most Leukeran side effects can be quickly moderated or removed if a patient doesn’t hesitate to ask for a medical advisor’s help.

Cease taking Leukeran if the following symptoms occur:

  • Traces of blood in the urine, orange or brick orange color of the urine
  • Blisters and red spots on the skin
  • High temperature with delirium
  • The severe allergic reaction, acute circumscribed edema, hard swelling of eyelids, mouth, and nostrils
  • Chokes and breathing with gurgling sounds, etc.

There can be side effects not listed above. If you experience something unusual, call an emergency ambulance immediately.
